The Beginning of Hampton Chutney
Hampton Chutney started with a love for Indian food and fresh ingredients. In 1995, Gary and Isabel MacGurn began making chutneys by hand, selling them to markets across the Hamptons and New York City. Their goal was simple: to share bold, simple flavors with the community they loved.
Inspired by South India
The idea for Hampton Chutney was born at an ashram in South India. Gary and Isabel met while cooking for hundreds of people each day as part of seva, or selfless service. Their time there taught them that food could bring people together, inspire joy, and create lasting memories.
Opening the First Dosa Shop
In 1997, Hampton Chutney opened its first dosa shop in Amagansett. Large, crispy dosas were made fresh to order, with customers watching every step. Even with lines out the door, the space stayed calm and inviting, filled with the soft sounds of devotional Indian chants.
A Unique Dosa Menu
Beyond the classic Potato Masala dosa, Hampton Chutney introduced new fillings like grilled portobello mushrooms, spinach and goat cheese, and avocado with fresh tomato. A breakfast dosa with eggs, spinach, and avocado quickly became a favorite. Each dosa was served with homemade chutneys.
